Access in Summary

Car Parking/Drop Off

The Car Parking area at Holkham is accessed along Lady Anne's Drive which is a tarmac driveway off of the A149 which runs through the Village. The Car Park provides the nearest vehicle access to the beach and onto an Easy Access trail leading directly to the beach and a second easy access trail leading to a birdwatching hide and a further viewpoint over the western beach. There is a further trail that continues to a second hide but this is not easily accessible. The Car Park is a pay and display facility managed by the Holkham Estate. There are two designated accessible spaces which are located at the far end of the drive at the closest point possible to the trails.

The Wells Beach Road Car Park is accessed from the harbour at Wells-Next-the-Sea. The Car Park provides the closest parking point for visitors using the Norfolk Coastal Path towards Holkham. The Car Park is a pay and display facility which is managed by Holkham Estate. The Car Park has a semi constructed surface of compacted stone.

Toilets

There are accessible toilet facilities in the Wells Beach Road Car Park. There are no toilets at the Lady Anne's Drive Car Park.

Norfolk Coastal Path Wells to Holkham

This part of the Norfolk Coastal Path takes visitors from the Well Beach Road Car Park at Wells next the Sea to the Car Park at the bottom of Lady Anne's Drive in the Village of Holkham. The track is a destination walk of around 3km in length. The track is relatively flat along its length over a constructed surface of compacted and crushed stones on a naturally trodden base. There is a kissing gate at the start of the trail which may restrict access for larger mobility type vehicles however the walk is generally suitable for most visitors who are able to travel 3km unassisted. There are three seating opportunities along this stretch of the Coastal Path. Wheelchair users are advised that all terrain type vehicles would be recommended.

Easy Access trail to the Western Beach

The Easy Access Trail starts at the Lady Anne's Drive Car Park in the Village of Holkham. Much of the trail is a wide track constructed of compacted and crushed stone on a relatively level surface but the far end consists of a purpose built boardwalk which extends out to a viewing platform on the shoreline. The boardwalk and adjacent bird watching hide are on a much steeper gradient and reached via the stone pathway which some visitors may not be able to access without assistance. The trail is a destination walk of around 1.17 km so a complete round trip would be some 2.35 km.

There are several seating opportunities along the path and at the viewpoint from which there is a stunning view over the beach. The track is relatively level with only slight deviations in gradient and is constructed of compacted and crushed stones over a firm base.

Path to the Beach

This is a short (656 metres) round trip route from the Lady Anne’s Drive Car Park to a viewpoint over the main beach. The route mostly follows a wooden boardwalk but at times this may have a covering of loose sand. There are passing places along the way, a bench half way along and seating at the viewpoint.

Tower (Jordan) hide trail

Much of this trail follows the same route as the Easy Access Path to the Western Beach. The trail is a destination trail of 1.27 km (each way) finishing at the Joe Jordan (Tower) Hide which can only be accessed up a steep flight of steps.
