Car Park and Drop Off

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham site is served by several pay on foot car parking areas. Main car park A is closest to the new hospital building and offers free accessible parking to blue badge holders. Level 2 of this car park is dedicated for accessible parking with a lift provided to ground floor level. Hospital car park D is a little closer to the accident and emergency as well as the clinical decision units, however, the access route from the car park involves some steep inclines. It is possible to drop off almost directly outside of the hospital buildings but waiting is limited. Visitors should note that both car parks A and D have height restriction barriers. High top vehicle accessible parking is provided on the access road opposite the taxi rank adjacent to the new hospital.

Access at Entrance

The main entrance into the new hospital building is located on Hospital Way. A central revolving door has accessible controls which allow the revolution speed to be slowed if required. Visitors may choose to use the automatic pass doors situated alongside the revolving door. The pass doors are manually operated by a push pad which is situated to the right of the door on entry and is at accessible height. The entry doors open in an inwards direction once activated. The accident and emergency unit and clinical decision unit have their own dedicated entrances. Both of these departments have fully automatic, double doors for access. The thresholds are level at all entry points.

Reception

The main hospital reception and information desk is situated on the ground floor directly ahead at the main entrance. The reception counter is at an accessible height with appropriate knee recess sections. There is a variety of seating in the main reception area. The hospital's own volunteers are available at peak times to assist visitors in finding their relevant departments. A communication pack is available at main reception containing aids for visually and hearing impaired visitors.

Facilities

The hospital has accessible toilet facilities on every floor of the building. The main toilet area in the entrance lobby on the ground floor provides for both left and right sided transfer. There is also an accessible baby changing unit and separate feeding room at this ground floor location. On all other floors the accessible toilets are situated immediately opposite the visitor lifts. Main departments within the hospital also provide accessible or assisted toilets in the waiting areas.

The new hospital building offers a variety of restaurants and shops providing for patients and visitors needs. In the main entrance lobby there is a branch of WHSmiths, a Costa Coffee and The Spice of Life Restaurant. These outlets provide a range of food and drink ranging from confectionary and light snacks to a full hot meal. The main hospital restaurant, The Plaza, is located on the second floor of the building with lifts providing access. Again there is a substantial choice of lighter snacks and hot cooked meals available. Highchairs are provided in all the restaurant areas.

Many of the hospital's outpatient departments operate a self check in facility allowing visitors to register for appointments. Machines are widely available throughout the hospital.

Access to All Areas

Visitors are able to use lifts to travel to all floors of the hospital building. The main lifts are located to the right when entering the hospital, 4 accessible lifts are available. Stairs are also provided for visitors who may prefer to walk between floors. Two further lifts or alternatively an open rise stair case are located immediately adjacent to the hospital reception, these lifts serve the ground, first and second floors only but are more conveniently located for the Plaza, education departments and the faith and community centre.

Access around the hospital is via wide and spacious corridors. Internal doors along the main circulation routes are generally held in the open position and floor surfaces are suitable for the passage of wheelchair users.
